8 Best AI Accounting Software for Indian Businesses (2026)

Every tool on this list is used by Indian businesses today. We compared them on what actually matters: GST compliance, AI automation depth, pricing in rupees, and who they're really built for.

By Chirag Goyal, Founder of Zoffer Updated 10 min read
Disclosure: Zoffer is on this list. We built it, so we know its strengths and gaps better than anyone. We've applied the same honest lens to ourselves — including where we fall short. Every other tool was evaluated on publicly available pricing, features, and documentation.

How we picked these 8 tools

We started with 20+ tools that call themselves "AI accounting software" in India. We cut it to 8 using three filters:

  1. Actually available in India — with INR pricing, GST support, or an Indian entity. We dropped Vic.ai, Zeni, Docyt and BILL (all US-focused, no GST).
  2. AI is real, not a label — the tool must automate at least one core accounting workflow (bill extraction, categorisation, reconciliation) using ML or OCR, not just offer a chatbot skin over static reports.
  3. Used by real businesses — not in beta, not "launching soon," not vaporware.

Tool-by-tool breakdown

Zoho Books Most complete

The default choice for Indian businesses going cloud-first. Zoho Books covers invoicing, expense tracking, bank reconciliation, project accounting, and GST compliance in one platform. Its AI assistant Zia handles receipt scanning, auto-categorisation, payment reminders, and anomaly detection — and can answer financial questions in plain language.

Best for
SMEs that want a full accounting suite with built-in GST filing and don't mind a setup curve
AI depth
Real — receipt OCR, auto-categorise transactions, anomaly flags, Zia natural-language Q&A
GST
Registered GST Suvidha Provider. File GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B directly inside the app.
Pricing
Free for businesses under ₹25L revenue. Standard ₹899/mo, Professional ₹1,499/mo, Premium ₹2,999/mo.
Not for
Owners who want simplicity. Zoho Books has 50+ screens. If you're not willing to invest time in setup, you'll underuse it.

The most capable platform on this list, but capability comes with complexity. If you have a CA or bookkeeper managing your account, Zoho Books is the best foundation to build on.

TallyPrime The incumbent

India's most widely used accounting software — over 2 million businesses. Desktop-first, built for inventory-heavy operations. Every CA in the country knows Tally. Its AI features are minimal (auto bank import, basic matching), but the depth of its accounting, inventory, and statutory compliance is unmatched.

Best for
Established businesses with inventory — traders, manufacturers, distributors — who have a trained accountant on staff
AI depth
Low. Auto bank import and basic transaction matching. No OCR, no AI categorisation. The "AI" is in Suvit, which bolts on top.
GST
Comprehensive — GSTR-1, 3B, 2B reconciliation, e-invoicing, e-way bills. The deepest statutory suite on this list.
Pricing
Silver ₹22,500 one-time. Gold ₹67,500 one-time. Annual renewal (TSS) ₹4,500-₹13,500/yr.
Not for
Early-stage founders doing their own books. Tally assumes accounting knowledge — it's powerful, but the learning curve is steep if you don't have an accountant.

The gold standard for Indian inventory businesses. But Tally is a ledger system, not an AI tool — if you want automation, pair it with Suvit.

Suvit (Vyapar TaxOne) AI for Tally users

Suvit doesn't replace your accounting software — it sits on top of Tally and automates the manual data entry that makes accountants miserable. Upload a bank statement or a stack of invoices, and Suvit's AI extracts the data and creates entries directly inside Tally. It also handles GSTR reconciliation with 30+ automated compliance checks.

Best for
CA firms and Tally-based businesses that spend hours on manual data entry and GST reconciliation
AI depth
Strong — AI extraction from bank statements, purchase invoices and sales invoices into Tally ledgers. WhatsApp-based document collection from clients.
GST
GSTR-1, 2A, 2B reconciliation with 30+ compliance checks. Designed for CA firms managing multiple clients.
Pricing
Plans start around ₹10,000/year. Per-client pricing for CA firms.
Not for
Businesses that don't use Tally. Suvit is built around the Tally workflow — if you're on Zoho Books or something else, it won't help.

The best bolt-on AI for Tally users. If your CA already uses Tally and data entry is the bottleneck, Suvit is the highest-leverage purchase on this list.

Zoffer That's us

Zoffer takes a different approach: instead of building another dashboard for bill entry, it meets you on the app you already use — WhatsApp. Forward a photo, PDF, or voice note of any bill. Zoffer's AI extracts the vendor, amount, GST, and date, then drafts the entry in your accounting software. You approve on a simple dashboard, and it posts to your books.

Best for
MSME owners and their teams who already communicate on WhatsApp and want zero-friction bill capture without learning a new app
AI depth
Focused — OCR and AI extraction from photos, PDFs, handwritten kachcha bills, and voice notes. Auto-vendor matching that learns over time. Natural-language Q&A over your books.
GST
GST extraction from bills is automatic. Filing happens through your connected accounting software (Zoho Books today, Tally in early access).
Pricing
Free for 20 bills/month. Pro ₹999/month (200 bills). Pro Auto ₹899/month. Top-up 100 credits for ₹599.
Not for
Businesses that need inventory management, direct GST filing, or a full general ledger. Zoffer is a capture-and-post layer, not a standalone accounting platform. You still need Zoho Books or Tally underneath.

We built Zoffer because the founder ran 4 businesses and the accounting bottleneck was always the same — bills lost on WhatsApp, entries delayed, real cashflow unknown. If your team's workflow is "photo a bill, send it on WhatsApp," Zoffer turns that into an accounting entry. If you need a full-suite platform, start with Zoho Books and add Zoffer for the capture layer.

KhataBuddy GST billing + WhatsApp

KhataBuddy is a GST billing and inventory app aimed at retailers, wholesalers, and small traders. It handles invoicing, stock management, payment tracking, and basic reporting. You can share invoices via WhatsApp, but the core workflow is app-based — WhatsApp is a delivery channel, not the input method.

Best for
Small retailers and traders who need GST-compliant billing with inventory tracking and WhatsApp invoice sharing
AI depth
Moderate — AI assistant for billing queries and invoice generation. Not focused on bill extraction or bank reconciliation.
GST
GST invoicing and GSTR-1 report generation. Not a direct filing platform.
Pricing
Premium ₹1,599/yr. Elite ₹2,879/yr. Ultimate ₹4,799/yr. Free trial available.
Not for
Service businesses, or anyone who needs deep accounting (double-entry, P&L, balance sheet). KhataBuddy is a billing tool first, not an accounting platform.

Good for the retailer who needs GST invoicing and inventory in one app at a low price point. But don't confuse "shares invoices on WhatsApp" with "works on WhatsApp" — the bill entry still happens inside the app.

Vyapar Offline-first billing

Vyapar is India's most popular billing app for micro-businesses. It works offline, handles GST invoicing, basic inventory, and payment tracking. WhatsApp invoice sharing is built in. The AI features are minimal — this is a billing tool, not an accounting platform — but for a shop owner who needs to create GST bills and track payments, it does the job at a low price.

Best for
Small retailers, kirana stores, traders who need offline GST billing and payment tracking
AI depth
Minimal. Invoice templates, basic reports. No OCR, no AI extraction, no bank reconciliation.
GST
Creates GST-compliant invoices. Generates GSTR reports but doesn't file directly.
Pricing
Desktop Silver ₹3,420/yr. Desktop + Mobile ₹4,010/yr.
Not for
Service businesses needing double-entry books. Anyone who needs financial statements, balance sheets, or investor-grade reporting.

The right tool if you run a physical shop and need to create bills fast, even without internet. But this is a billing app, not accounting software — don't expect it to replace Tally or Zoho Books.

Refrens Invoicing + receivables

Refrens started as an invoicing platform for freelancers and has grown into a broader accounting tool with expense tracking, GST reconciliation, and an AI assistant called Freya. Its strength is the invoicing-to-payment workflow — client portals, payment links, automated reminders, and e-invoicing support.

Best for
Freelancers, agencies, and service businesses focused on sending invoices and getting paid on time
AI depth
Growing — Freya AI answers financial queries in plain language. AI-assisted bank reconciliation. Still early compared to Zoho Books.
GST
GSTR-1, e-invoice, e-way bill, and GST reconciliation. Solid coverage for a platform this size.
Pricing
Free plan available. Paid plans vary — contact for current pricing.
Not for
Businesses that need deep accounting workflows, monthly close processes, or Schedule III-compliant balance sheets.

If your main problem is "clients don't pay on time" and you need invoicing with teeth, Refrens is strong. For full accounting, it's still catching up.

HostBooks Compliance-heavy

HostBooks combines accounting with India's full compliance stack — GST, TDS, e-invoicing, payroll — in one cloud platform. Its Zeno document processing engine reads business documents and converts them into accounting entries. Designed for businesses that deal with heavy statutory compliance.

Best for
Growing Indian SMEs with heavy GST, TDS, and e-invoicing workloads that need everything under one roof
AI depth
Strong — AI bank reconciliation, Zeno agentic document processing (document → accounting entry), automatic statement matching.
GST
Full GSTR suite, TDS, e-invoicing. One of the deepest compliance platforms on this list.
Pricing
Contact vendor for official pricing.
Not for
Beginners. HostBooks has a steeper learning curve than simpler tools — it's built for businesses that already have compliance complexity, not for someone creating their first invoice.

If compliance is your biggest headache — GST returns, TDS, payroll, e-invoicing all together — HostBooks handles more of it than most platforms. But it's not where you start; it's where you graduate to.

How to choose: the decision framework

Don't start with features. Start with your workflow.

  • You have inventory and a trained accountant? TallyPrime. Add Suvit if data entry is the bottleneck.
  • You want a full cloud platform and will invest time in setup? Zoho Books. It does the most, but you need to learn it.
  • Your team forwards bills on WhatsApp and you need zero-app capture? Zoffer on top of Zoho Books (or Tally, coming soon).
  • You run a shop and need offline GST billing? Vyapar or KhataBuddy.
  • You're a freelancer who needs invoicing and payment tracking? Refrens.
  • You're a CA managing multiple clients' books? Suvit for Tally clients. Zoho Books + Zoffer for cloud clients.
  • You have heavy GST + TDS + payroll compliance? HostBooks.

Frequently asked questions

AI accounting software uses machine learning and OCR to automate manual bookkeeping tasks — reading bills, extracting vendor and GST details, categorising transactions, reconciling bank statements, and flagging anomalies. The human still approves; the AI handles the data entry.

It depends on your workflow. Zoho Books is the most complete cloud platform with GST filing built in. TallyPrime remains the standard for inventory-heavy businesses with a trained accountant. Zoffer is the best option if your team already lives on WhatsApp and you want zero-app bill capture. See our comparison table above for a full breakdown.

No. AI handles the repetitive data entry — reading bills, extracting amounts, matching bank transactions. Your CA still handles tax strategy, compliance judgement calls, and filing. Think of AI as giving your accountant 10x speed, not replacing them.

The tools in this list support GST-compliant invoicing and most offer direct GSTR filing. But AI extracts data — it doesn't file returns autonomously. You or your CA review and approve before anything hits the GST portal. The audit trail stays clean because a human signs off.

Prices range from free (Zoho Books for businesses under ₹25 lakh revenue) to ₹22,500 one-time (TallyPrime Silver). Most cloud tools charge ₹899 to ₹2,999 per month. Zoffer starts free with 20 bills/month, Pro is ₹999/month. KhataBuddy starts at ₹1,599/year.
